The FARC guerrilla weapons are collected by the UN, disabled and handed over to the Unit for Peace (UNIPEP) of the Colombian National Police. The Peace Agreements signed in Cuba in 2017 stipulate that with these weapons three monuments will be made for memory: one in New York, one in Cuba and another in Bogotá.

The artist Doris Salcedo receives the commission to perform the Monument in Bogotá. The weapons delivered by the FARC arrive at the foundry where they are melted in large furnaces. The operators move the lava of the resulting metal. We can see all the process supervised by Salcedo. With the material, the artist creates large pieces that will be the floor of a Modern Art Centre in Bogotá called FRAGMENTOS.

The internationally well-known sculptor invites victims of sexual violence from all actors of the Colombian war (Army, Paramilitary and FARC) to forge the pieces to relieve their pain. They explain their trauma, but with no details of their experiences. They keep silent during decades for fear of social stigma.

The victims reflect on the meaning of the destruction of weapons in the fire. For many, it is a metaphor for the melting of the pain in Colombia and its passage towards overcoming the pain. Without forgetting the facts, they have given a chance to peace in their hearts speaking loud about their painful experience, so that it never repeats.

Gathered in the studio of Salcedo in Bogotá, they heat with anger the pieces and feel released. Their gestures demonstrate their tenacity and resilience, while through their interviews they tell how they let the past go. They laugh and cry. Now they are liberated women, full of strength and empowered.

Some of them are standing, head on the top, in front of the ruins of the house that make up the building of the Museum FRAGMENTOS in Bogotá, built by Carlos Granada. With their final testimonies, they give us a great lesson of courage, dignity and commitment on the construction of a lasting peace in Colombia.
